The hedgehog is Britain’s most loved wild animal

If you find a sick, injured or orphaned hedgehog

Hedgehog Welfare

Over the last sixty years Britain’s hedgehog population has dwindled dramatically – from some 50 million to less than one million.

The hogs’ natural habitat is being destroyed on the rural landscape as well as household gardens.

To help this much-love mammal to survive renowned conservationist Janet Peto started Hedgehog Welfare and it has now been running for more than 30 years.

The charity, registered in 2021, takes in sick hedgehogs and nurses them back to health before releasing them into the wild.

Dedicated Team

Over the years a dedicated team of multi-skilled volunteers has saved the lives of thousands of hedgehogs.

Sadly, not every rescue has a happy ending. Many hogs do not recover from “garden” accidents with lawnmowers and strimmers.

To that end, Hedgehog Welfare also offers help on hedgehog care and conservation.

The charity also gives advice to people on what to do with hedgehogs found in distress. Janet was a finalist in the South Kesteven Community Awards for her dedication to helping hedgehogs.
