Tiggy's Story

At the beginning of June 2015, two tiny hoglets were brought into care. Their mother had abandoned them after the nest was disturbed.

They were about 24hours old and weighed just over 20g each. The female was called Tiggy and the male, Mo Mo. They were placed in our intensive care unit and kept warm. At first, they were ‘bottle’ fed with a tiny amount of special milk every hour. This continued through the night too. Sadly after a few days the little male died.

However, Tiggy continued to thrive. Gradually she could manage more milk and the time between feeds increased. Her eyes opened after fourteen days, and she learned to lap. Her teeth came through after three weeks and she began to tuck in to kitten meat and biscuits.

Eventually Tiggy gained enough weight to be released and was returned to the wild after a few weeks.

Sadly, we can’t save all the hedgehogs that come into our care. Some are just too ill or seriously injured. None are left to suffer.

Each hedgehog is precious. Each hedgehog receives the best care possible. Each one we release back to the wild is a joy and helps to conserve this endangered species.
